Audition by Barbara Walters

audition-barbara-walters I just finally finished reading Barbara Walters new book, Audition.  I like Barbara just fine, but never have had a particularly big interest in her, although, Lord knows, she’s had a much more eventful and interesting life than I ever will have.  I’m just not that politically minded I guess, and I know she is, so I have sort of steered clear.

Anyhow, I guess all the gossip about the *scandalous* things her book had within its pages got me interested enough (plus the fact that it was available on my fabulous Kindle!), and honestly, I really thought this book was awesome.  I absolutely loved the writing style – very un-Barbara Walters-like.  Certainly wasn’t what I expected.  The writing was very conversational and easy going, with lots of (aside) types of comments.  I have thought about researching a little to see if this book was ghost written, but then I decided that if it was, that I didn’t want to know about it.  I really fell in love with the Barbara Walters I saw in this book, honestly.

As far as the scandalous *stuff*, there wasn’t much to all of that.  She was very, very honest and forthright with some of the things she presented in this book – if you choose to see it as scandalous, then so be it, I guess.  While the advertising and PR might have accentuated the scandal, it was nothing I thought that was written to be sensational and to sell books.  I even enjoyed all of the political stories, as some of the things she talked about I have tried to avoid knowing much about (Iran contra scandal, middle east *stuff*), and I learned just enough that it was good for me and not overwhelming.

I finished this book with a marathon reading session yesterday afternoon, and was sad to finally come to the end.  I really went from a blaze feeling about her to a genuine interest and affection for the life she has led and the person that she is.  Fantastic book Barbara – now, when will you put your first book in the Kindle format???
