New York Times Scathing Article on “The Rachel Zoe Project”

the-rachel-zoe-project-bravo I know if I watch this show, I’m going to have some form of empathy for the chupacabra known as Rachel Zoe.  She has been bashed from every possible angle by the media for the last couple of years, being called everything from a meth peddler to, well, a chupacabra.  That’s tough.  So The Rachel Zoe Project is showing on Bravo.  I watched the preview episode, and kinda liked it.  I have not made it to any of the actual episodes yet – so I hope Bravo plays a marathon at some point when I am sitting in front of the television.  But that would mean I had to get up and out of my office - *ain’t* gonna happen anytime soon.

/makes note:  MUST get TV in the office when we rebuild the house this winter

So, back to the topic at hand.  NYT is not impressed with Rachel Zoe or her TV show.  They printed a scathing article on Monday – it is a good read, and damn it, it is making me sympathetic.  Ginia Bellafante writes:

Given that Ms. Zoe is already a pox on humanity — exploiting an aesthetic of dissipation, invading our collective consciousness and spraying it with dummy dust — it is amazing that “The Rachel Zoe Project,” which focuses on her career, manages to send its audience deeper into the territory of smug NPR obsessives who won’t stop ranting about triviality’s conquest of the American soul. First I hated the show for passing Ms. Zoe off as an innovator when all she does is recycle a look that has held appeal since Tom Ford’s days at Gucci. Then I hated it for turning me into Max von Sydow in “Hannah and Her Sisters,” a cranky old person hungering for anachronisms.

Um – ouch.  I think a pox on humanity *might* be a little much.  But maybe not.  Like I said, I haven’t been a fan, but that preview show has already worked its magic on me.  Do I dare watch the rest??  Are you watching??  I do love to look at the clothes…

  1. i’ve been watching. :) that article is too brutal, wheww.

  2. @ Dexie:

What do you think about the show? And Rachel Zoe? And most of all, thanks for stopping by Dexie! xoxox :)

  3. The show is superficial, as can be expected. I could hate Zoe for saying collecting Birkin is collecting Art for her but it’s her money to ridiculously blow…LOL I’d love to see an episode where she’s actually eating but I won’t hold my breathe :).

  4. @ Dexie:

I wish I had that much money to ridiculously blow. Dammit. ;)

  5. I saw that article too and I was surprised. I enjoy the show, it’s not awesome but its enjoyable. I think people aren’t being to fair to her. The woman must have some sort of a talent, to have been a stylist to celebrities for so long and to become this succesful. Even if her talent is just making people feel confident, that’s worth something, and people should try not be so jealous. Other than that, yes, she could look better with a few extra pounds.
