Christina Loves Her Kindle Too: Oprah’s Discount Code

I’m sorry to all you Oprah fanatics out there, but I am not a big fan.  A little too culty for my taste, BUT, I have to say that Oprah knows something good when she sees it.  Or is offered tons of money to endorse it.  Whatever.  ;)

Take, for instance, Oprah’s most recent endorsement – the Amazon Kindle.  This is a fabulous gadget, for sure.  I have owned one for about 6 months now, and really, really love it.  It is not a cheap investment, but until November 1st, if you use the code OPRAHWINFREY, you can get a Kindle for $50 off the current retail price of $359.

You might think that’s an outrageous price to pay for an eBook reader (It has come down $40 since I bought mine, and is less expensive than the Sony Reader, their biggest competitor), but if you buy and read a lot of books, it will come close to paying for itself in a pretty short amount of time.  Most of the books for the Kindle are $9.99, and as soon as they hit the stores, pretty much they hit the Kindle.  I have probably 30 books on my Kindle right now, and assuming I have saved $7 on each one, that’s $210 in savings for me over 6 months.  I have quite a few business books on there that retail for much higher than $17, so I am pretty sure I have saved more than that.

I have found that I probably do buy more books than I normally would have purchased, but it has saved me from the airport bookstores where you pay full price for books you might otherwise never have purchased.  I have also bought and read books that I wouldn’t have probably purchased full price – Barbara Walters Audition, for example.  And I would have missed out on that one – because it was a great read.  I also read the entire Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series on the Kindle, because I couldn’t get my daughters friends to return the books to my daughter on time.  And I had to read them *now.*  The Kindle came through amazingly!

Probably the best feature of the Kindle is the Whispernet wireless delivery.  You don’t need to hook up to a computer to get your books – there is wireless built right in.  Just order and have it on your Kindle in like a minute.  Or less.  Seriously.  It is awesome.  I also have used the PDF email to Kindle option – and it works fantastically.  Just email whatever PDF you want to read to your kindle (they will give you your email address when you buy one), and *poof* – there it is.  I am currently reading an eBook from Diabetic-diet-secrets.com, and it is really so convenient to be able to take these types of things with you instead of being strapped to your computer reading them.  And its so much lighter than toting a book around with you too.  And I hate traveling with a book that I finish on my trip but still have to drag home.  Maybe with yet another book in tow if I have gotten sucked in at the airport!

I haven’t had to use the extra memory option yet, but there is a slot that holds an SD memory card, so you can store as many books as you want.  Amazon says it has storage for 200 titles built in.  Give me another 6 months and Ill probably be able to testify.  ;)  You can also delete books from your Kindle, but Amazon will store them for you so you can reload them any time you want.  I trust Amazon, they have come through for me many, many times over the years.  And I really do love their Kindle – I’ll bet I love it a lot more than Oprah does, in fact.

Man, this is getting long.  I could wax on for a while longer about the amazingness of Amazon and the Kindle, but Ill shut up now.  If you have any questions about it, please feel free to ask – I am happy to answer anything.

  1. I don’t have one but I’ve wanted one since it came out. I’m patiently awaiting for them to produce the Canadian version with all the bells and whistles of the U.S. version. Patiently.

  2. @ Moe:

Definitely wait for the bells and whistles. The wireless is *just* amazing and just totally feeds my need for instant gratification. It can’t be too much longer til they come to Canada, can it???

  3. Own and Kindle and LOVE LOVE LOVE it, it’s one of my favorite possessions. Since I’ve been traveling a ton lately it’s come in so handy, even when I’m reading at home it’s my preferred method. I’m normally a fast reader, but now I just devour books. Just a little rave from a Kindle fan/owner.

  4. @ Janice:

Glad you love yours too! It does help in the speed reading, doesn’t it? Although I wish I could have slowed down a bit on those Twilight books…

  5. this is number two on my most wanted list… I can’t wait to get one for the newspapers. It’s so hard to get the NYT and Wall STreet here.

  6. Just came across your blog on Google. Interesting post, you bring up a few good things to think about. Good luck with the blog.

  7. Ohhhh… but I’m a Sony Reader-holic! Admittedly though, there are things I *do* like about chez Kindle 2 too. (heh heh).

I might have to see if Mr. Bubbles can get the K2 and then I’ll try that one out.

Just never liked the feel or look of the Kindle.. seems kinda cheap & plastic-y. The Sony feel like I’m getting my money’s worth. Strong, sturdy, sexy, ease of use for PDFs etc…

.. will report back. Thanks C!
