Introducing the Kindle 2

amazon-kindle-2-front The big gadget news this week is Amazon’s announcement of the release of the Kindle 2.  As you hopefully know, I am a huge fan of my Kindle, and the Kindle 2 makes some improvements in the design and functionality – and is selling for about the same price as the other one - $359.

amazon-kindle-2-width I have to say that the price is by far the biggest drawback for the Kindle – you would think that they could lower that price since you are roped into buying all the books for it from Amazon, right?  However, I suspect they don’t drop the price mostly because – well, they don’t need to.  The supply and demand are pretty darned even.  There has consistently been a higher demand for the Kindle than supply – so why lower the price, right?

So anyway, I do love my Kindle – yes, it turns pages sometimes at inconvenient times, like when I’m showing it off to someone, but overall it works fantastically and it has definitely been a huge factor in me reading a whole lot more last year than I have read in years.  Do you know I read 30 fiction books between October and December last year?  I blame the Kindle, and Twilight.  The instant gratification you get when ordering right off the Kindle is to die for.  I don’t feel the need to upgrade to the newest Kindle – BUT, I do want to order one for my hubby, so now might be the time.  Current Kindle owners will get some sort of preference if they order now.

Sooooo – are you a Kindle fanatic like me?  Just curious?  Say, “no way I would pay $359 for a book reader?”  Inquiring minds…

  1. I would love a Kindle! Just can’t swing the price. I have a $50 gift certificate waiting in my Amazon account for me to apply towards one at some point hopefully.

  2. Great post. I have been contemplating purchasing one. Does this it heat up? I had a lap top that would heat up and the keys were just too hot. :)

  3. I would definitely buy one if it were available in Canada. I have so mnay books that I could save so much room in my house, and I tend not to take my books everywhere with me because they aren’t always convenient to lug around.

  4. Keep up the good work, great post here!

  5. I’ve actually debating buying a kindle 2. The big sticking point for me is that once I finish with a book, I couldn’t ‘loan’ it to someone else for another book. I have a huge library of books (well over 2 tons of books, apparently, was what the movers told me when I moved from California to Tennessee, and I’ve only acquired more since moving to Florida), so I tend to loan out books to friends and vice versa. I think it would also be a pain to purchase all my current books to put on the kind.

On the other hand, I think it would be great to be able to purchase any book I want and put as many as I’d like on the device for trips. I get tired of lugging books around on vacation, but I always read on vacation.

  6. I tell you, I really love my Kindle. I love to have “hard copies” too, so I have been known to rebuy some of the books that I want to keep around. I mostly put my fiction on my Kindle - and you can’t beat it for vacations and flying, when you dont need *another* danged heavy thing in your carry on. :)

  7. So your review and endorsement convinced me to buy the Kindle2 for my husband for his birthday :) He’ll be receiving it tomorrow and he doesn’t know, so I think he’ll be ecstatic.

  8. Great posting. Keep it up.
